This paper will critically examine the teaching and learning of te reo me ngā tikanga (Māori language and customs) in bilingual educational contexts. Students will explore the implications for planning and implementation of aspects Māori in these learning contexts.

There will also be a particular emphasis on extending student's understanding and proficiency with second language teaching methodology for learning and teaching of te reo me ngā tikanga in the classroom.

  • A Māori worldview is unique and has relevance in our New Zealand primary school context.
  • Learning and teaching te reo Māori in primary schools is affected by a range of educational issues.
